OLD CASTLE TINPLATE WORKS

In 1866 Old Castle was built for £9000 (£750,000 in today’s money). It took 10 months to complete. Old Castle proudly stood where Sandy water park now stands. A year after production started the company was making a profit of £140,000 in today’s money. In all, Old Castle had 18 mills manned by 440 employees. Old Castle contributed not only to the local economy but it built a community around it. Everyone worked with each other and looked out for one another. In 1874 the workers went to the newly established unions demanding more wages. Coined as the ‘Lock-Out of 1874’ the workers laid down their tools for 20 weeks. That’s 5 months with no pay. This shows the community spirit that was in Llanelli. David Morris reminisces “No, we didn’t go hungry, and some of us had large families to keep. But they were happy days although the work was very hard. We helped each other – that was the secret, I suppose.”At the height of production Old castle was making 1,000,000 boxes a year and being shipped all over the world. Production at the works ceased in 1953 ending 87 years of production.
